Botulinum toxin is a purified protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In very small, controlled medical doses, it’s used safely in both aesthetic and medical treatments.

Botulinum toxin temporarily blocks nerve signals to muscles, which causes the muscle to relax. When the muscle can’t contract as strongly, it helps:

• Smooth wrinkles and fine lines caused by facial expressions
